Living with with Purpose

Updated: Dec 19, 2018

2018 has been an interesting year all round - business has been generally tough for a lot of us and many brands in the UK have been naturally holding back in light of the mess that Brexit has caused. However, I wanted to share a potentially life changing moment which happened completely out of the blue and I think has the potential to change the way I work with my clients and has already changed how I interact with my family and friends.

It all happened on a recent flight to see a client in Dubai. I was spending my normal hour in the book store at Heathrow waiting for my flight, trawling through the mass of books on offer and I happened upon a book and an author I'd never heard of. It was called 'Purpose .. the extraordinary benefits of focusing on what matters most' by Ben Renshaw. The title really spoke to me and by the time the wheels touched down in Dubai some 8 hours later, I'd finished it. Ben talks about the need for leaders and individuals to have a purpose - something that makes you feel good about your life and brings you clarity and inner resolve. Once someone has Purpose in their lives, says Ben, they feel calm, driven and they are able to add more value to others as well as themselves. This really struck a chord as I have spent the last 20 years helping others. Ben says that by finding your true Purpose, it's super easy to be on point with your own path.

I was on such a high having read the book that I felt compelled to write to Ben. I told him openly about my journey of the last 20 years. I don't know why I just felt that I would have something in common with him and that perhaps we might be able to share experiences and help one another out. I'm delighted to say he responded to my random email and we've since met a couple of times, shared a coffee and Ben has helped me begin to find my purpose and we hope to work together in 2019. Just goes to show that reaching out and making contact is one of the greatest benefits of our socially connected world.

So as we all check out for another year and begin to think ahead to 2019, my hopes and dreams for the next 12 months of my life are very different. I know where I'm headed. I'm going to embrace change. I am excited about some interesting new projects on the horizon and, despite the world around me being chaotic, I'm on a direct path to my newfound Purpose.

It will be interesting to see how I am able to share it with others and help them to find theirs by spreading Ben's message.
